Michael Wade
Mike's Morning Take

Today is FOMC day. That is the only sentence that matters before you touch a single position. The Fed decision drops at 2:00 PM ET, Powell speaks at 2:30 PM ET, and Kalshi prediction markets are pricing a 94% chance the Fed holds at 4.00%. The market is not positioned for a surprise — which means if the statement language shifts hawkish, or Powell hesitates on the rate path, you will see a fast, unforgiving move in both equities and rates. Sit tight before the number; do not chase the open.

The backdrop coming in is actually supportive on the earnings front. This morning's before-the-open reporters are broadly beating: GEV smashed by 20%, DINO crushed by 51%, BIIB surprised by 30%, and AER beat by a remarkable 57%. Energy names and industrials are setting a constructive tone. Futures are up modestly — S&P +0.23%, Nasdaq +0.39% — and WTI crude has ripped +1.86% to $101.76 on a reported Saudi refinery attack, which is inflationary background noise the Fed will have to navigate in its statement. Nat gas is up +13.76% overnight, the largest one-day move in the data. Watch energy cost pressures.

The one setup to watch — and the one trap to avoid. Tonight after the close you get GOOGL and MSFT, two multi-trillion-dollar prints that will set the tone for the entire tech rally. Do not build a speculative position in those names into the close expecting a pop; let the prints come out, read the guidance, and react to what the market does afterward rather than what you hope it does. The trap is buying elevated IV (implied volatility — the market's expectation of how much a stock will move) into both today's Fed and tonight's mega-cap reports. You are paying too much for that uncertainty. Be the house: let others overpay for options premium, and let the setups come to you post-announcement.

Bottom Line — Morning Playbook

Bias: Cautiously Bullish — earnings beats are constructive, but the Fed overhang keeps size small until 2 PM ET.

Best sectors: Technology (XLK, +1.7% yesterday), Consumer Discretionary (XLY), Materials (XLB), Utilities (XLU).

Weak sectors: Energy (XLE, -2.05% yesterday despite higher crude), Consumer Staples (XLP), Communication Services (XLC, worst 1-month performer at -7.08%).

Best opportunity: Stocks reporting strong beats this morning (GEV, DINO, BIIB, AER) may see continuation — but wait for the open to confirm the bid holds. Post-Fed, if the statement is neutral-to-dovish, tech longs into GOOGL/MSFT could work.

Biggest risk: A hawkish shift in Fed language or a Powell comment that re-prices the rate path. WTI above $100 and nat gas spiking give the Fed cover to stay higher for longer. Plus tonight's mega-cap prints: guidance disappointment could crater the Nasdaq after-hours.

Three levels to know: SPX support 7,576 / current 7,775 futures / resistance 7,843. QQQ prior close $721.25 / key zone $707-$724. IWM pivoting around $280 (spot = $280.18).

Three takeaways:

  1. Stay small and defined-risk until the FOMC statement at 2:00 PM ET.
  2. Earnings beats this morning are real — reward names like GEV and DINO if they hold pre-market gains at the open.
  3. Do not build size into GOOGL/MSFT earnings tonight — let the results print, then react.

Trade smart. Manage risk. Let the probabilities work for you.

Asia lifted on global earnings optimism. Europe mixed — UK budget news (Chancellor Healey presenting a "low-key" budget absorbing Iran war costs) weighing on GBP. U.S. futures rising ahead of tech earnings and the Fed decision, moderated by crude's jump on Saudi refinery attack news.

World & Geopolitical Backdrop

Iran war / Middle East (primary market risk): A Saudi Arabian refinery attack overnight has reignited supply-risk concerns, pushing WTI crude above $101. U.S. costs of the Iran conflict have risen above $47 billion (Pentagon estimate). Airlines are pulling back on fuel hedges and warning on fares — a cost-pressure signal for the broader economy. Qatari mediators have presented Iran with a new deal to end the conflict, but no resolution is imminent. Why it matters: Sustained crude above $100 is stagflationary — it limits the Fed's ability to ease and compresses corporate margins in energy-intensive sectors.

Yemen Houthis: Called for immediate evacuation of Aden airport. Adds to regional shipping risk and potential energy supply disruption.

UK Budget: Chancellor Healey presented a "low-key" budget, pledging fiscal discipline while absorbing £14 billion in extra debt interest costs tied to the Iran war. No tax rises on working people. Why it matters: Sterling-denominated assets and UK multinationals face fiscal drag, but the disciplined stance limits gilt (UK government bond) blowout risk.

U.S. Midterm Elections (next week): A Democratic House majority could bring increased scrutiny of prediction markets and the CFTC. Why it matters: Regulatory risk for fintech and prediction-market companies.

Global inflation: A Reuters poll shows high inflation is expected to persist globally into next year. This reinforces the "higher for longer" rate narrative heading into today's FOMC.

Federal Reserve Watch

Stance: On Hold at 4.00%

The Fed is widely expected to hold rates at 4.00% at today's October 28 meeting. The previous rate was 4.00% and consensus matches that. The primary market question is not the decision itself but the statement language and Powell's press conference tone — specifically whether the committee drops, softens, or retains language about "additional tightening may be appropriate," and what forward guidance looks like given crude above $100 and persistent inflation.

Kalshi Prediction Market — October 28, 2026 Meeting

Cut >25bps0%
Hike >25bps0%

Source: Kalshi (KXFEDDECISION-26OCT), fetched 08:40 ET. CME FedWatch feed not connected this run — Kalshi only shown.

Takeaway: The market sees virtually no chance of a cut or a hike today. The tail risk is a 6% hike probability — small, but if the statement language leans that way, equities will reprice fast. Own nothing large heading into 2 PM.

LEAD STORY — Broad before-open earnings beats this morning set a constructive pre-market tone. GEV (+20%), DINO (+51%), BIIB (+30%), and AER (+57%) are the headline results. See Earnings section for full detail.

Oil rips on Saudi refinery attack (Tue 9:49 PM ET): WTI up over 1% as a Saudi Arabian refinery attack reignited supply-risk concerns. This is the proximate cause of crude hitting $101.76 this morning — inflationary, and a complication for the FOMC statement today.

Nat gas +13.76% overnight — largest single-session move in the data. UK Chancellor Healey proposing to scrap fixed gas charges to help households (Wed 3:43 AM ET). Seasonal and geopolitical demand confluence.

Chipotle (CMG) put pressure pre-earnings: Traders are positioning heavily bearish into CMG's after-close report tonight (CNBC, Wed 8:04 AM ET). The options flow confirms heavy put activity.

Iran war costs $47B+ (Tue 9:01 PM ET): Pentagon confirms escalating cost. Airlines pulling back on fuel hedges and warning on fares — direct margin headwind for carriers.

Qatari ceasefire mediation (Wed 5:07 AM ET): New deal presented to Iran, but no resolution confirmed. Any ceasefire announcement would be a sharp crude-negative / risk-positive event — the tail risk to watch.

StanChart (STAN) soars after trouncing estimates (Wed 12:13 AM ET): Hikes full-year targets. Positive read for emerging-market focused financials.

Netanyahu wins political backing (Tue 10:48 PM ET): Survives domestically. Prolongs the military campaign and associated market uncertainty.

U.S. Midterms next week (Nov 3): A Democratic House could increase scrutiny of prediction markets, CFTC, and crypto ties (CNBC, Wed 7:24 AM ET). Near-term regulatory risk for those sectors.

High global inflation to persist into 2027 (Reuters poll): Confirms the "higher for longer" macro backdrop. Reinforces today's expected Fed hold.

(e) GEX / Dealer Positioning

GEX (Gamma Exposure — how much dealers need to buy/sell to stay hedged as the market moves) is shown for a window of strikes near the spot price only, not the full chain. The window cannot produce a gamma-flip level.

SPY — GEX window: strikes $695-$844 (±9.7% of spot $769.66). Within the strikes covered, the largest call-side gamma OI concentration is at the $800 strike ($1.09B call gamma OI) and $780 ($1.23B). Heaviest put gamma OI within the window at $755 (-$1.36B) and $750 (-$2.05B). Net: dealers are long gamma above $770, which dampens intraday moves — a stabilizing force.

QQQ — GEX window: strikes $647-$795 (±10.3% / 10.2% of spot $721.25). Heaviest call gamma OI within the window at $721 ($1.34B) and $720 ($1.48B). Heaviest put gamma OI at $700 (-$1.22B) and $690 (-$899M). The $720-$721 zone is the highest-gamma area within the covered strikes — expect sticky price action around that level today.

IWM — GEX window: strikes $175-$385 (±37% of spot $280.18). Heaviest call gamma OI within the window at $280 ($855M) and $290 ($264M). Heaviest put gamma OI at $270 (-$601M) and $265 (-$391M). The $280 strike is pinning IWM — that is both the highest call OI and closest to spot.

DIA — GEX window: $433-$610. Heaviest call gamma within the window at $530 and $520. Spot $523.28 is sandwiched between those strikes — neutral-to-stabilizing dealer positioning.

Put/Call volume ratio from today's early flow (per_ticker.options_volume): SPY P/C 5,944/5,186 (put-heavy, hedging); QQQ P/C 5,071/4,582 (slightly put-heavy). Net call premium SPY +$141K, QQQ net put premium +$650K — cautious positioning ahead of FOMC.

Market Breadth

Breadth data is based on 11 SPDR sector ETFs as a proxy. Full S&P 500 breadth requires a broader data feed.

MeasureReadingImplication
Sectors above 50-DMA7 of 11Majority of sectors technically healthy
Sectors above 200-DMA7 of 11Long-term trend intact for most sectors

Yesterday's Decliners6Energy, Staples, Financials, Health Care, Comm Services, Real Estate

Source: yfinance sector ETF proxy. 7/11 above 50-DMA is constructive but the 6 declining sectors yesterday suggest the rally is not broad — it is led by a handful of high-growth names. That makes GOOGL/MSFT earnings tonight disproportionately important to index direction.

CNN Fear & Greed

FEAR territory. Down from 33.6 yesterday. Week ago: 30.3 (also Fear).
VIX
17.42
Calm but not complacent. FOMC day could spike this toward 20-22.
AAII Survey

Put/Call (SPY)
5,944 / 5,186
Put-heavy early this session — cautious hedging ahead of FOMC.

Mood classification: FEAR — the Fear & Greed index at 33.5 confirms what the options data shows: participants are hedged and cautious. This is actually a setup-friendly environment for disciplined traders. Fear at 33 while the S&P is near highs means buyers are not chasing. Contrarian-bullish lean if the Fed comes in neutral and earnings continue to beat, but do not get ahead of the catalysts.

Trading Plan for Today

Bull Case

  • Fed holds and statement language is neutral-to-dovish ("data dependent," no hawkish lean)
  • Powell press conference acknowledges inflation progress, keeps rate-cut optionality
  • GOOGL and MSFT beat + guide higher tonight — Nasdaq gaps up Thursday open
  • Saudi ceasefire talks advance — crude pulls back, removes inflation overhang
  • Breadth expands: today's earnings beats (GEV, DINO, BIIB) hold gains at the open

Bear Case

  • Fed statement shifts hawkish — mentions inflation risks, removes rate-cut language
  • Powell signals hike is back on the table — rates spike, equities dump
  • GOOGL or MSFT miss on revenue or guide below consensus — tech sector wipeout after-hours
  • WTI holds above $100 + nat gas keeps spiking — inflation re-acceleration narrative
  • DAN-style earnings misses spread to more industrials/autos — breadth deteriorates

QQQ $707 (prior session low) / $680 (Jan 2027 put OI wall) $721-$724 (gamma concentration zone) $730 / $800 (call OI)
IWM $266 (put activity) / $260 $280 (gamma pin, spot) $290 / $295-$300

Defined-Risk Trade Ideas

Post-FOMC Neutral / Tech Long

If the Fed statement is neutral and VIX does not spike, consider a QQQ call spread (buying a call near current price, selling a call above) for Thursday expiry, targeting the GOOGL/MSFT catalyst. Define your max loss to the debit paid. Don't do this until after the 2:00 PM statement is out and the market's initial reaction is digested. Target: QQQ toward $730. Stop: close below $712.

GEV / DINO Morning Continuation

If pre-market gains in GEV and DINO hold at the open (volume confirms), consider stock or defined-risk calls on the open. GEV beat was large (+20%); DINO beat was enormous (+51%). Both have fundamental and price momentum. Stop below the opening price. Don't chase if they gap up further at open — let the first 15-30 minutes set the range.

Avoid / Hedge: Pre-FOMC Size

Do not carry large directional exposure into 2:00 PM ET. If you are long from yesterday, consider trimming to a size you're comfortable losing entirely if the Fed surprises hawkish. The premium you pay for protection (puts/spreads) is cheaper than a 2%+ gap-down on a surprise. The VIX at 17 is not pricing a hawkish shock.

CMG Put / Fade Risk

CNBC flagged heavy bearish positioning into CMG earnings tonight. The setup for a put play is crowded — if CMG reports in-line, those puts get crushed fast. Only play this with defined risk (buying puts, not selling calls naked). The crowded short is the risk, not the opportunity.

Invalidation

The entire post-FOMC bullish lean is invalidated if: (1) the FOMC statement uses the phrase "additional tightening" or equivalent — take off risk immediately; (2) QQQ closes below $712 — the technical structure breaks; (3) GOOGL and/or MSFT guide materially below consensus tonight — the Nasdaq leadership thesis fails. In any of those three scenarios: reduce size, protect capital, wait for clarity.

How to Read This Report
Pre-market bias
This is a before-open read based on overnight data, prior-session close, and early morning flow. Prices go stale fast — verify any specific level before trading.
IV rank (IV percentile)
Where today's implied volatility sits relative to the past year, 0-100%. High (70+) = expensive options, consider selling strategies. Low (30-) = cheap options, consider buying strategies.
GEX (Gamma Exposure)
The dollar amount dealers need to trade to stay hedged as the underlying moves. High positive GEX near current price = sticky, range-bound market. High negative GEX = dealers amplify moves (accelerant).
Vol/OI ratio
Options volume divided by open interest. Greater than 1 means volume exceeds existing positions — fresh, speculative bets are being placed, not just existing holders rolling.
Color language
Green = bullish / long · Red = bearish / short or avoid · Orange = caution / event risk · Grey = neutral.
Net premium
The dollar difference between call and put premiums transacted. Positive call net = buyers were more aggressive on calls (bullish flow). Positive put net = buyers more aggressive on puts (defensive/bearish flow).
Defined-risk
A trade where your maximum loss is known before entry — a spread, a long option, or a stock with a hard stop. The alternative (undefined-risk) is dangerous around binary events like today's FOMC and tonight's earnings.
