Why: NVDA dark-pool activity at $208.75 and heavy flow in NQ calls overnight are driving tech premium higher. European markets track Wall Street's overnight bid.

World & Geopolitical Backdrop
  • OpenAI / Russia: OpenAI bans Russian ChatGPT accounts tied to a covert misinformation campaign. Why it matters for traders: AI regulation risk remains in focus; could weigh on AI sentiment if governments accelerate restrictions.
  • US Strategic Petroleum Reserve: SPR stocks fell 3.7 million barrels to their lowest since 1982 (Reuters). Why it matters: Adds a structural supply floor to crude; partially explains why WTI holds above $80 despite overnight weakness.
  • Gold / Jackson Hole: Gold is rallying ahead of US inflation data and the Jackson Hole symposium later this week (Reuters). Why it matters: Markets are listening for any Fed pivot signals; gold at $4,692 signals ongoing safe-haven demand and inflation anxiety.
  • Canada Trade: Canadian Trade Minister LeBlanc says Canada wants "the best situation of all US trade partners." Why it matters: Trade policy uncertainty persists; domestic-focused sectors (industrials, materials) face ongoing tariff headline risk.
  • Deutsche Bank / AI: Deutsche Bank is expanding AI usage via Google Cloud to boost revenues and cut costs. Why it matters: Financial sector AI adoption accelerating โ€” a positive read-through for cloud/AI infrastructure names.

Federal Reserve Watch

Fed Stance: Cautious Hold โ€” Watching Inflation

Current rate: Elevated. Core PCE YoY running at 3.3% (consensus for July, awaiting actual). The Fed's preferred inflation gauge remains above target. Fed Barkin speaks this morning โ€” any commentary on the pace of cuts will move markets.

Jackson Hole Symposium is on the economic calendar this week (Aug 27 session), which is the primary reason gold is rallying and rate markets are twitchy. Traders are listening for any pivot signals.

Market-Implied Odds โ€” September 16, 2026 Meeting (Kalshi prediction market)

Kalshi and the Fed commentary are telling the same story: the market expects the Fed to hold rates steady in September with a notable minority pricing a hike. No cut is priced.

Options Market & Whale Activity

All data from the Unusual Whales feed. This is a scanned set of 40 liquid optionable names โ€” not a full market-wide screener.

๐Ÿ“Š (a) Elevated IV โ€” Rich Premium / Sell-Vol Candidates

CRM
87th %ile
Richest premium ahead of tomorrow's earnings โ€” defined-risk plays only
NVDA
76th %ile
High IV before Wednesday earnings โ€” premium is expensive; consider spreads
MSTR
67th %ile
Bitcoin proxy โ€” elevated crypto volatility
ADBE
67th %ile

QCOM
44th %ile

Near annual lows for IV. Cheap options on a large-cap compounder.
IWM
8th %ile
Small-cap index โ€” very cheap vol. Directional play if rate thesis plays out.

๐Ÿณ (d) Whale Flow, Net Premium & Dark Pool Prints

Net premium pressure (yesterday's session): Call premium was persistently negative on the market tide (institutions selling calls / buying puts) during much of the session โ€” a hedging posture. By afternoon, put premium also went negative, suggesting dealers were unwinding hedges into the close. Net read: mixed/cautious institutional flow yesterday; futures green this morning suggests overnight rotation back to risk.

Key whale alerts from yesterday's close:

  • SPX $7,750 PUT Nov20: $629K premium, bid-side โ€” institutional downside hedge well below market. Repeat hits pattern.
  • SPY $726 PUT Sep18: $2.23M premium, ask-side โ€” large ascending fill; fresh protective positioning.
  • SPY $728 PUT Sep18: $2.23M premium, bid-side โ€” significant bear hedge at 728 level.
  • IWM $285 PUT Sep18: $708K + $775K, bid-side โ€” institutional small-cap protection. Notable.
  • COIN $220 CALL Sep18: $125K ask-side sweep โ€” bullish crypto-adjacent call buying.
  • META $557.5 PUT Aug26: $379K ask-side โ€” short-dated put ahead of next few sessions.
  • TSLA $360 CALL Sep04: $133K ascending fill โ€” bullish near-term positioning.
  • BE (Bloom Energy) $197.5 CALL Aug28: $221K ask-side โ€” near-expiry call with vol 4.4ร— OI. Fresh aggressive buy.

Notable dark-pool prints (overnight):

  • SPY: Multiple prints at $763.65 (700โ€“1,200 shares); $916K, $534K blocks โ€” institutional rebalancing at ATH levels
  • MU (Micron): 304 shares @ $903 โ€” $137K print in extended hours; memory sector interest
  • MSTR: 3,429 shares @ $122.60 โ€” $420K block; Bitcoin proxy positioning
  • TQQQ: Multiple blocks totaling 14,000+ shares @ $69.01โ€“69.02 โ€” leveraged tech ETF accumulation
  • GDX (Gold Miners): 8,479 shares @ $104.15 โ€” $883K block; gold miner positioning aligns with gold rally
  • NVDA: 500 shares @ $208.75 โ€” clean extended-hours block ahead of earnings
  • GLD: 400 shares @ $429.29 โ€” $171K; gold ETF accumulation

โšก (e) GEX / Dealer Positioning

Based on per_ticker GEX (gamma exposure) data from the packet:

  • SPY: Largest positive gamma at the $760โ€“765 zone โ€” dealers are long gamma here and will sell rallies/buy dips. This acts as a magnetic zone keeping SPY gravitating toward 763โ€“765 intraday.
  • SPY: Put wall concentration at $700, $710, $760 (Sep18 OI) provides structural support floors.
  • QQQ: GEX data shows call-gamma concentration at $707โ€“710 and put-gamma concentration at $704โ€“707. The $706โ€“708 zone is the gamma fulcrum โ€” market makers are balanced there, meaning moves away from this zone tend to accelerate.
  • IWM: GEX concentrated around $295โ€“300 (current price area). Positive gamma at $300 should dampen large intraday moves. The large $285 put OI (115K contracts) is a dealer-hedge anchor below.
  • Put/Call ratios: SPY put OI (13.6M) vs call OI (5.4M) = 2.5ร— โ€” typical structural put hedge. QQQ put OI (6.4M) vs call OI (5.3M) = 1.2ร—. IWM put OI (6.7M) vs call OI (2.6M) = 2.6ร— โ€” elevated put protection in small-caps.

WTI crude down 3%+ overnight to $82.43. Energy is the worst-performing sector on a 1-day basis (โˆ’0.83%). Despite strong 1-month momentum (+8.1%), the overnight crude drop creates near-term headwinds for energy longs. SPR at 1982 lows provides floor but demand concerns dominate today.

๐ŸŸข Open-Market Buys (Highest Conviction)

  • BABA โ€” Joseph Tsai (Director): 720,000 shares at $14.47 (ordinary shares, ADR ~$118.47) on Aug 25 โ€” largest dollar buy in the dataset. Co-founder conviction.

  • IDAI โ€” Gareth Genner (CEO): 2,000 shares at $3.21 on Aug 24 โ€” CEO open-market buy at low price level. Small-cap conviction.

๐Ÿ”ด Notable Open-Market Sells (10b5-1 or discretionary)

  • SE โ€” Ye Gang (COO): 20,000 shares at ~$115.93โ€“$116.87 Aug 21 + 20,000 on Aug 24 โ€” 10b5-1 plan, systematic. Not alarming but worth noting at this price.

Commodities

Gold ($4,692, +1.1%): Leading safe-haven asset today. Jackson Hole + PCE Thursday are the near-term catalysts. GEX on GLD shows dealer positioning constructive. Target: prior highs near $5,294 on bullish continuation. Support: $4,500-ish.

Silver ($67.94, โˆ’0.88%): Lagging gold. Gold/silver ratio widening โ€” watch for convergence trade if gold holds.

WTI Crude ($82.43, โˆ’3.03%): Sharp overnight drop. Consensus API build of +1.9M barrels tonight. Energy sector pressure today. SPR at 44-year low provides structural floor but near-term oversupply narrative dominates.

Copper ($6.63, +0.49%): Near 52-week high. China demand signal positive. Industrials lagging today may be a buy-the-dip on copper strength.

Natural Gas ($2.78, flat): No catalyst. Well below $3.34 high. Neutral.

Currencies & Crypto

DXY (99.01, flat): Dollar near 52-week lows. Weak dollar historically a tailwind for commodities and U.S. multinational earnings. Not a headwind today.

EUR/USD (1.1700): Flat. Near 52-week high. Euro strength = dollar weakness = commodities bid.

USD/JPY (159.29, +0.24%): Yen weakening. Watch for BOJ intervention commentary if this accelerates beyond 160.

USD/CNY (6.71): Near 52-week low. Stable China currency environment.

Bitcoin ($78,780, โˆ’0.23%): Slight overnight pullback from recent highs. $82,139 was the 52-week high. Stablecoin inflows to Binance/Coinbase signal potential buyers waiting. Watch for reclaim of $80K as momentum signal.

Ethereum ($2,462, โˆ’0.81%): Underperforming BTC. ETH at 52-week high ($2,515) is within range โ€” $2,400 is key support to watch.

Mood Classification
NEUTRAL
Cautious optimism. Market comfortable but not euphoric ahead of NVDA.

Bottom line on sentiment: VIX at 15.77 is low โ€” the options market is telling you it's not worried. That's both a signal that conditions are benign and a warning that complacency can reverse fast. The 34% Kalshi hike probability is the one sentiment divergence worth watching โ€” the bond market is less sanguine than stocks.

Trading Plan for Today

๐ŸŸข Bull Case

What has to happen: CB Consumer Confidence beats (above 90.8), Fed Barkin sounds dovish or at worst neutral, 10Y yield stays below 4.70%, and pre-NVDA positioning continues to drive tech higher.

Sectors to lean into: Technology (XLK), Communication Services (XLC), Consumer Discretionary (XLY), Healthcare (XLV). Gold and copper add fuel as inflation/growth story.

Key level to hold: SPX 7,600 (intraday) / QQQ 700 / NQ futures 29,000

๐Ÿ”ด Bear Case

What has to happen: Consumer Confidence miss below 88, Fed Barkin hawkish surprise, 10Y yield spikes above 4.74%, or crude selloff extends to below $80 triggering broader risk-off.

Sectors to avoid/short: Technology (XLK), Energy (XLE), Industrials (XLI). Real Estate and Utilities defensive but already elevated.

Key level to break: SPX 7,550 (below MA50) / QQQ 695 / NQ futures 28,800

Defined-Risk Ideas (not recommendations โ€” size appropriately):

  • AMD call debit spread: IV at 9th %ile โ€” buy Sep call spread (e.g., $455/$475). Cheap premium for NVDA halo trade. Max loss = debit paid.
  • MU call debit spread: IV at 10th %ile โ€” buy Sep $920/$960 call spread. Memory cycle + NVDA catalyst window. Max loss = debit paid.
  • GLD call: IV 34th %ile โ€” buy Sep ATM call. Jackson Hole + PCE catalyst window. Stop on close below $425 GLD.
  • INTU iron condor (post-earnings): After tonight's print, if IV collapses, sell a Sep iron condor at fair value. Define risk with wings.
  • IWM put vertical (hedge): IV 8th %ile โ€” buy Sep $285/$275 put spread cheap. Protects against small-cap deterioration if rates spike.

Invalidation signals: SPX loses 7,550 on close โ†’ defensive posture. 10Y yield above 4.74% โ†’ cut tech longs. WTI below $80 โ†’ exit energy longs immediately. NVDA pre-announcement or negative guidance leak โ†’ reduce AI exposure.

Mike's Morning Take

Here's what actually matters this morning. Futures are green, headlines are bullish, and everyone's talking about NVDA. But let me be straight with you โ€” the real trade today isn't NVDA. You can't trade that earnings event with a simple long stock position and call it a plan. What you can trade is the setup around it.

The setup is this: RSI on the S&P is at 40 and on the Nasdaq at 36.9. That's the kind of reading where counter-trend bounces happen. Futures are already gapping up on it. So the question you need to ask yourself is: am I chasing the gap, or am I waiting for the trade to come to me? Let the price come to you. If the market opens hot and fades back to yesterday's close within the first 30 minutes, that's your tell that the gap is going to fill. If it holds the open and builds, then the RSI bounce is real and you can add exposure into strength.

The one setup I'm watching most closely today isn't in megacap tech โ€” it's AMD and MU. Both are sitting at the cheapest implied volatility in the semiconductor space right now. If NVDA prints well tomorrow and the sector rips, these two move hardest. And because IV is so low, you can buy a defined-risk call spread on either of them for next to nothing compared to what you'd pay on NVDA itself. That's the asymmetric setup. Be the house. Let the probabilities work. You don't need to swing for the fences on NVDA earnings โ€” you need to position intelligently in the names that benefit from the move without the binary earnings risk.

3 Takeaways

  1. Don't chase NVDA โ€” position intelligently around it. Use AMD and MU call spreads (IV 9thโ€“10th %ile) for asymmetric NVDA halo exposure without earnings binary risk.
  2. Watch 10 AM Consumer Confidence like a hawk. A beat extends the morning bid; a miss below 88 triggers a rotation into defensives and you need to reposition quickly.
  3. Gold is the cleanest trade today. Jackson Hole + PCE Thursday + elevated CFTC long positioning + $4,692 price action = the macro setup is in place. GLD IV at 34th %ile means options are reasonably priced.

Trade smart. Manage risk. Let the probabilities work for you.

How to Read This Report
Pre-Market Edition
All prices are prior-session closes or overnight futures โ€” not live intraday quotes. Verify before trading.
Swing Horizon
All ideas are framed for a 3-day to 6-week hold โ€” not day-trading, not long-term investing.
Confidence Score (1โ€“10)
How aligned macro, price action, flow and sector rotation are. 6/10 = constructive but not high-conviction; too many catalysts still pending.
IV Rank
Where current implied volatility (the "price" of options) sits in its 1-year range. Above 50th %ile = rich premium; below 20th %ile = cheap premium.
Vol/OI Ratio
Volume รท Open Interest. Ratio above 1.0 means fresh positioning (new money entering). The higher the ratio, the more likely this is a new directional bet.
GEX / Gamma Exposure
How dealers hedge their option books. Positive gamma zones act like magnets or dampeners on price moves. Negative gamma zones can accelerate moves.
Dark Pool Prints
Large institutional trades reported to a TRF. Extended-hours dark-pool blocks often signal institutional intent, but are not guarantees of direction.
Color Language
Green = bullish/long ยท Red = bearish/short-or-avoid ยท Grey = neutral ยท Amber = caution/watch
โš  Earnings Flag
If a company reports within your planned hold window, that is event risk โ€” a gap, not a technical move. Size smaller and define your risk.
